Since the COVID-19 variant Omicron was first detected some weeks back, Omicron has now caused the hospitalization of 11,000 people as of Thursday.
The NYV health department said the data is higher than the 7,919 hospitalizations recorded a week ago.
The latest health data also shows that the hospitalizations have climbed each day in the past seven days, and 1,404 people are currently in the ICU, up from 1,072 last week.
Aside from hospitalizations, Omicron also caused many deaths in NY with 130 additional deaths recorded on Thursday which is higher than the 80 recorded last week.
With the huge number of hospitalizations and death that it causes, health officials are urging people to get vaccinated and boosted.
“Omicron is the fastest and most formidable variant of the coronavirus we have seen so far,” NYC Health Commissioner Dave A. Chokshi said.
Meanwhile, Scott Gottlieb, the former FDA Commissioner, and a Pfizer board member said despite the grim data he believes the Omicron surge will fall very soon.
