7-Year-Old Refuses to Remove Kippa During Judo Tournament Despite Losing Points For It

In the small Brazilian village of Coritiba, where being Jewish is unusual, lives 7-year-old Samuel Steigler. Despite this, he proudly wears his Tzitzis and Kippa because the neighborhood Chabad home converted his family to Judaism.

Samuel recently competed in a judo match but could not attend the opening rounds because they fell on the Sabbath.

He was ordered to remove his kippa before the competition but refused, even though it cost him points each time it failed.

When questioned afterward about how he felt when told to remove his kippa, Samuel replied, “I didn’t have any doubts; my first thought was: No, I’m not taking off my kippa.”

Local media sites praised the young man for adhering to his religious beliefs while desiring to win the competition.

Samuel was commended by Rabbi Yosef and Tilla Dobrevski, who oversees the Coritiva Chabad house, for not trying to hide his Jewish heritage.

They have taken actions like maintaining Shabbos and koshering their home since being associated with our Chabad house, according to their daughter Mrs. Tzivi Stolick, who communicates with Steigler’s family. Samuel has joined our shiurim and has shown a remarkable commitment to upholding justice.

When his kippa dropped during the competition, she claimed that Samuel was adamant that he would not give in at all despite expectations.
