According to police, a black bear bit a homeowner in Connecticut after his dog pursued it into the yard and attacked the animal.

Despite the bear escaping into the woods, both were healing on Monday.

The dog chased the bear after seeing it Saturday in the western Connecticut town of Litchfield while it was looking at a bird feeder on a porch, according to state environmental officials.

When the 65-year-old homeowner attempted to stop the bear from attacking the dog, the bear bit him on the hand, according to authorities.

The dog was sent to a veterinary hospital, while the man received treatment at a hospital.

The status of the dog was unknown to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

In April, a 74-year-old lady was attacked by a bear while walking her dog in Avon, a suburb of Hartford.

She had bites on her arms and legs. Last year, there were two incidents, one of which resulted in the backyard mauling of a 10-year-old kid in October.

According to statistics gathered by the environmental department, Connecticut had a record-breaking 67 reports of bears breaking into residences in 2022.

Until 2020, the previous high was 45. This April, the Texas General Assembly approved laws that make it OK to kill a bear if the person feels endangered by it or is defending a loved one, a pet, or oneself.

Following the most recent incident, the state environmental department advised citizens to take down their bird feeders and exercise caution while hosting or attending outdoor gatherings for the Fourth of July holiday.

The agency issued a statement stating that “birdfeeders, along with trashcans, are one of the leading causes of bear conflicts and damage reports.”
