Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member Shri Thanedar, a congressman from Michigan, has quit his membership.
Thanedar declared that he “can no longer associate with an organization that refuses to call out terrorism in all its forms.”
Thanedar was the only member of the DSA’s six Democrats in Congress who spoke out against the group’s terrible statement earlier this week that denigrated Israel and supported the Hamas terror attack.
The statement was scorned by Thanedar as having nothing to do with socialism.
“This is standard antisemitic language.
According to Thanedar, the DSA overlooked the fact that this was a terrorist attack and the largest death of Jews since the Holocaust. As a member of such a group, “I am not very proud of the DSA right now.”
Thanedar continued, “For the DSA to endorse a terrorist group and such a heinous terrorist attack is just inconceivable, and I want no part of that. It’s not progressive, that. It’s not socialism, that.
That is just utterly reckless hatred towards Jews and the State of Israel. Later, on Wednesday, he publicly renounced his membership in a tweet.
Indian-born Thanedar is the representative for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, which covers a large portion of Wayne County, including Detroit, Grosse Pointe, and Downriver. There is a sizable Muslim community in Detroit.
