About comments encouraging Palestinian terrorists, Israeli journalist Israel Frey was briefly detained on Tuesday.
The ultra-Orthodox far-left reporter tweeted in September how much he admired a Palestinian allegedly plotting a significant terrorist strike in Tel Aviv.
“See what a hero is: He walked the entire distance from Nablus to Tel Aviv, and despite all the Israelis in his immediate vicinity participating in the oppression, death, and destruction of his people, he still sought out lawful targets and spared the lives of innocent people.
He would receive a medal in a world that has been healed, Frey tweeted at the time.
Tel Aviv police detained Frey after failing to respond to repeated summonses, and they stated they were looking into whether he had incited violence or terrorism.
When Frey expressed his sympathy for a Palestinian terrorist, the new government had not yet been elected.
Frey blamed his detention on this.
He declared in a statement that “the new leadership is here already, it is fascist, and it wants us weak and terrified,” adding that “there is only one path when faced with a fascist leadership: raising our heads.”
Ofer Cassif, a member of the Joint List, described the situation as “a disgusting political arrest.”
In October, Cassif, the lone Jew in the Hadash-Ta’al party, which is mainly Arab, claimed that Jews living in Judea and Samaria were responsible for Palestinian violence on them since they were not innocent bystanders.
He said that Israeli occupation is to blame for Palestinian attacks, which he called “not terror,” and added, “they exist as a thorn in the throats of the Palestinians.”
A day after Ronen Hanania, a terrorist attack victim outside of Kiryat Arba was laid to rest, he made his remarks.
The right-wing group B’Tsalmo, which made one of three complaints to the police about Frey, hailed his arrest and declared in a statement that “the inciter” Frey’s place is behind bars, not in any public positions.
Before being fired last month for his allegedly pro-terrorist remarks, Frey had worked for Democrat TV.
Later on Tuesday, he was released from custody.
