The renowned Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was hit by a car, killing the driver, according to German police on Monday.
Images from the site show the dark-colored vehicle in a wrecked state between two pillars of the capital’s well-known tourist attraction.
Marcin Krol, the consul for Poland in Berlin, tweeted that he could establish the identity of the “driver of the Mercedes that struck the Brandenburg Gate yesterday at 23:30.”
The vehicle also had Polish registration.
Initial information, according to police, revealed that no other people were hurt in the crash, which occurred just before midnight.
The Brandenburg Gate was partially covered in soot, but there didn’t seem to be any significant structural harm.
