Shimon Gozlan, a Ponovezh Yeshiva student who was detained for desertion on Wednesday and whose detention triggered violent protests by the Jerusalem Faction in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak, was given a 68-day prison sentence.
After the festival season, the sentence will be put into practice. Gozlan (age 23) was detained during a regular check in the north when it was discovered that he was a deserter who had skipped the recruiting office to request a delay in his military duty.
The Jerusalem Faction’s “Committee for Saving the Torah World” will convene at Rabbi Asher Deutsch’s house to discuss whether to resume the protests following the prison term.
At 4:30 PM on Wednesday, the protesters blocked key intersections in Jerusalem and on Route 4 near Bnei Brak, resulting in severe traffic jams and disruptions.
Some protesters hid underneath a police water cannon truck to stop it from moving. After three hours of protests, the crowd broke up on its own, and the highways were reopened.
During the event, the police detained two of the protesters.
