During a tour of an underwater cavern system intended to carry water from the Erie Canal underneath the western New York city of Lockport, a boat carrying 36 passengers sank on Monday, according to authorities.
Before 11:30 a.m., emergency services were sent to Lockport Cave Tours, which is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Niagara Falls.
Visitors to the excursions are taken on a boat journey underground that is only lit by tiny lights.
According to a press release from the police, “crews are working to assist all parties safely out of the area.” There was no quick way to get more details.
