A Twitter employee in charge of content safety resigns in response to Elon Musk’s criticism

Soon after owner Elon Musk complained publicly about how the platform handled posts about transgender themes, a top Twitter executive in charge of safety and content moderation quit the firm.

The resignation signaled a new round of unrest among Twitter’s top executives since Musk took over last year.

Late on Friday, Ella Irwin, Twitter’s head of trust and safety, tweeted two times to confirm her departure.

Her departure occurred shortly after Musk blasted Twitter for handling posts concerning a conservative media outlet’s video that raised concerns about transgender medical treatment for children and teenagers.

However, she did not explain why she was departing in the message.

The Daily Wire’s co-CEO, Jeremy Boreing, had complained, and Musk was reacting to him.

Boreing said that Twitter was stifling the movie by labeling posts about it as hate speech and removing it from lists of current topics in tweets and retweets of conservative commentators on Thursday.

Twitter terminated a deal to premiere “What is a Woman?,” according to a tweet from Boreing.

Twitter’s terms of service forbid purposeful misgendering of transgender people, therefore this tweet was removed “for free on the platform because of two instances misgendering.'”

Numerous Twitter employees erred in this. It is undoubtedly permitted, Musk responded in a tweet. “Whether or not you agree with using someone’s preferred pronouns, failing to do so is at the very least impolite and undoubtedly does not violate any laws.”

Irwin tweeted on Friday that “one or two people noticed” that she had left the workplace the previous day and mentioned rumors about whether she had been let go or had quit. She made light of the fact that she would explain her leaving in 24 tweets.

She later wrote in a post that she was kidding about the lengthy narrative.

In all seriousness, I did resign, but it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I’m grateful to have worked with this incredible group of enthusiastic, inventive, and dedicated individuals.

I’ll be supporting you all on Twitter as you move along.”

Irwin had been the company’s most prominent spokesperson for its constantly evolving content standards in recent months, second only to Musk.

Since Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October, the company has struggled to win back advertisers frightened by his radical reforms and relaxation of the laws against hate speech.

Linda Yaccarino, an incoming CEO of Twitter with decades of expertise in the media and advertising industries, hasn’t started yet.

The Associated Press contacted Irwin and Twitter for comment, but neither party responded.

Since the San Francisco firm was acquired and taken private by the billionaire Tesla owner, Twitter has been in upheaval, with significant layoffs and voluntary departures.

Shortly after the takeover, the company’s director of trust and safety quit, and the top positions continued to change.
