The plan proposes the establishment of a position that would answer to the secretary of state and require years of Middle East diplomatic experience as well as a thorough knowledge of both Jewish and Muslim cultures.
Former American ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro is allegedly being considered.
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), the bill’s author, said that adding a special envoy would be essential for bringing Saudi Arabia into the Accords and advancing their strengthening and expansion.
“We are now closer than ever to achieving a durable, long-term peace in the Middle East.”
Supporter of the bill and Abraham Accords proponent Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) said, “We are working to strengthen and expand the Abraham Accords, support Israel’s existing partnerships, and increase regional cooperation to counter shared threats.”
