After the vicious Hamas onslaught, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Israel has the right to defend itself, but he issued a warning against harming Gaza’s civilian population.
After a meeting with the leaders of former Soviet states in Kyrgyzstan, Putin addressed the media and claimed that “Israel faced an attack that was unprecedented not only in its scale but also in its cruelty.”
He also claimed that Israel is retaliating “on a large scale and using cruel methods,” adding that “Israel certainly has the right to ensure its security.” Putin sounded the alarm that an assault on Gaza would be intolerable. He said, “Not everyone there supports Hamas.”
He highlighted that Russia is willing to assist in mediating a settlement because it has long-standing friendly relations with both Israel and the Palestinians.
