After the leaders of the two nations urged closer collaboration, the US stated on Tuesday that Russia would be in violation of UN rules if it reached an arms deal with North Korea.

According to State Department spokeswoman Vedant Patel, “Any kind of security cooperation or arms deal between North Korea and Russia would unquestionably be in violation of a number of UN Security Council resolutions.” Patel emphasized that in order to support its “war of aggression” on Ukraine, Russia was relying on North Korea and Iran, two of the most isolated countries in the world.

“Our information indicates that Russia is seeking to increase this type of military cooperation with the DPRK,” he said, using the North’s full name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

In statements commemorating North Korea’s National Liberation Day on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un both emphasized the need for closer ties.

The remarks come after Sergei Shoigu, the defense minister of Russia, visited Pyongyang.
