A Lake Worth guy is being detained after robbing and assaulting a man who was Jewish and another person; the event may qualify as a hate crime.
On April 28th at 3:15 PM, the event happened outside the Walmart Supercenter on State Road 7 in West Boca Raton.
According to Teri Barbera, a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, 34-year-old Daniel Scanlan approached his victim from behind, took his yarmulka off his head, called him a “dirty Jew kike,” then spit inside it before tossing it to the ground.
Scanlan attacked another person who tried to help, seizing her phone, shouting obscenities at her, and throwing both of them to the ground. The unidentified woman had a minor elbow laceration, while the Jewish male was unharmed.
Scanlan escaped the scene in a white Kia, which was later found by detectives from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office, who then transported him to the Palm Beach County jail.
He is charged with two counts of both robbery without a weapon or firearm and battery on a victim 65 years of age or older.
The arrest of Scanlan was announced on Twitter by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Zero tolerance for this appeared next to his mug shot.
Twitter user Jezabel Yeb responded to the tweet with, “This is why I admire Palm Beach County sheriff’s [sic] office the most! #Busted.” They reject the vile violence that is often tolerated around the nation. Respect to the brave residents of Palm Beach County and our officers. [sic]”
