Authorities said a 21-foot (6.4-meter) killer whale perished on Wednesday after beaching in central Florida’s Atlantic Ocean.
According to a statement from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, the orca made a beach landing in Palm Coast, Florida, which is more than 60 miles (97 kilometers) south of Jacksonville.
Crews from the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the sheriff’s office were on site to help remove the carcass so that a necropsy may be completed, Messod Bendayan, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, wrote in an email.
In a sheriff’s office video, the orca could be seen lying on its side, splashed by waves.
The largest and most powerful marine creatures in the ocean are orcas.
