After Delta, Lambda variant detected in Peru and South American countries

After the Delta variant, the World Health Organization revealed another coronavirus mutation dubbed Lambda.

The Lambda variant which was first detected in Peru has already spread in other South American countries.

Although the variant is not yet that deadly compared to Delta, the WHO already declared Lambda a “variant of interest” on June 15.

The WHO observed that the variant is unusual and potentially a dangerous mutation.

That means it’s suspected to be extra infectious or dangerous.

Early research has shown that the Lambda variant could be potentially harmful to humans since the Lambda variant is relatively resistant to the vaccine-induced antisera (blood serum containing antibodies against specific antigens).

The study also shows that Lambda is feasible to cause breakthrough infection.

While the Lambda variant has the potential to be harmful, Dr. Ricardo Soto Rifo, a researcher at the University of Chile, Santiago who is studying the Lambda variant, said there is no need to panic yet.

The August 4 data from health authorities state that there had been at least 1,053 instances of Lambda infection in the US, 12 of which were recorded within the past four weeks.

However, the Lambda variant is not yet listed alongside other “notable” variants, such as Delta, on the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
