The House and its Republican leadership are in disarray after Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted on Tuesday in a historic confrontation, a first in American history.
The vote, which was driven by a group of hard-right conservatives, was 216-210. Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, Rep. McCarthy’s main adversary, proposed the “motion to vacate,” bringing together a number of extreme Republican detractors of the speaker as well as numerous Democrats who believe he is unfit to serve as speaker.
There is no clear successor to lead the House Republican majority, so the next moves are uncertain.
