After Tuesday night’s drawing yielded no significant winners, the Mega Millions jackpot increased to an estimated $910 million, continuing a run of bad luck that began in April.
The yellow ball was drawn together with the numerals 25, 3, 5, 6, 44, and 61. The number of unsuccessful drawings has increased to 28, at least for the large prize, due to the lack of a winner for the estimated $820 million jackpot.
Following a $1.08 billion Powerball prize won by a player in Los Angeles on July 19, the new $910 million payout is among the biggest in American lottery history. The sixth-largest prize in American history has not yet had a winner proclaimed by California lottery officials.
The biggest jackpot ever won in the United States was a $2.04 billion Powerball payout in November 2022.
The severe odds make winning so rare in the two lottery games that the jackpots become so huge, allowing the grand prize to keep rolling over.
There is a 1 in 302.5 million chance of winning the Mega Millions jackpot. The game offers many additional minor rewards, the first of which is $2. There is a 1 in 24 chance of winning any reward overall.
The second-tier reward in the game was won by two tickets from Tuesday’s drawing that matched all five of the white balls.
One was sold in Texas and is worth $4 million because it has the optional multiplier, which was 4X on Tuesday night and is available in most states for an additional $1.
The other, which was purchased in Maryland, will receive the usual $1 million award. Only if a single player wins and elects to receive their payout in the form of an annuity with one immediate payment and 29 annual allotments, will the prize on the line on Friday night be that big ($910 million).
The anticipated $464.2 million for Friday night’s drawing would represent the jackpot winner’s share of the lump payment, which is almost always given to jackpot winners.
