Only five times in the game’s history has the top reward hit the billion-dollar mark—last Friday night, the Mega Millions jackpot rose to an estimated $1.05 billion.
The anticipated $940 million jackpot for matching all six numbers on Friday was not won by anyone due to the extremely high chances. The numbers selected included the gold ball (18), 5, 10, 28, 52, and 63. Since the last Mega Millions jackpot-winning ticket was sold on April 18, 29 consecutive draws have gone by without a jackpot winner.
The $1.05 billion jackpot up for grabs in the following drawing on Tuesday night would go to a single winner who chose to receive annual payments over a 30-year annuity.
The average jackpot winner chooses a lump sum payout, which for Tuesday’s drawing would be about $527.9 million.
Mega Millions said in a statement early on Saturday that the potential prize is the fourth-largest in the game and the fifth above $1 billion. There were no jackpot winners, but two Pennsylvania tickets connected for $1 million each, and one was worth $5 million.
According to Mega Millions, there were additional $1 million winners in Arizona, California, and New York.
Less than two weeks have passed since a Los Angeles resident claimed the sixth-largest Powerball jackpot in American history, worth $1.08 billion. The prize’s winner is still a mystery.

Because there are such slim chances of winning, lottery jackpots increase dramatically. The likelihood of winning the jackpot in Mega Millions is approximately 1 in 302.6 million.
Federal taxes would also be due by winners, and many states tax lottery prizes as well.
