Israel Hayom has learned from sources engaged in the subject that Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is notorious for her anti-Israel views, has been meeting with Jewish leaders in her district—the 14th congressional district—in New York for the first time.
AOC met with rabbis and other leaders, both male and female, who identified with the liberal wing of the Jewish community, some of whom were strongly connected to J Street.
Although the meeting’s precise topic is unknown, one of the individuals claimed Ocasio-Cortez largely listened to participants’ opinions and refrained from expressing her anti-Israel views.
AOC is a member of the so-called “Squad,” an eight-person association of the most liberal and left-leaning Congressmen known for their animosity toward Israel. Contrary to Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, two of her fellow Squad members, AOC is less outspoken on the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
In contrast to other Squad members who voted against funding for Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system, she previously abstained on the issue. AOC stated that her decision to abstain was a mistake after receiving intense criticism from the left for doing so.
AOC has avoided all interactions with Jewish leaders and Israeli officials since entering politics in 2018. Prior to now, she had never agreed to meetings or interviews with the local Jewish media.
According to sources, the move resulted from AOC’s potential intention to challenge Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in the race for the seat. Schumer presently has the backing of the majority of the city’s Jewish groups, including the right-wing Orthodox.
AOC’s office was contacted by Israel Hayom for comment, but no response was given.
