Amazon acquires one Medical for $3.9 billion

By 02/22/2023 6:45 PMNo CommentsBy YidInfo Staff

Amazon announced on Wednesday that the $3.9 billion acquisition of One Medical, a primary care company, has been completed.

The e-commerce behemoth claims that the acquisition, announced in July, is crucial to its expanding healthcare business, including the patient-to-doctor messaging service Amazon Clinic and its online pharmacy Amazon Pharmacy.

One Medical, owned by a San Francisco company named 1Life Healthcare Inc., has 214 medical offices and 815,000 members in more than 20 regions.

This membership-based business provides both in-person visits and virtual treatment.

New U.S. customers can join the service for $144 for the first year, a 28% reduction, the two businesses announced on Wednesday.

Anti-monopoly organizations have urged the Federal Trade Commission to prevent Amazon’s business acquisition, claiming it would jeopardize patient privacy and give the online retailer more significant market sway.

The FTC requested more information from One Medical and Amazon in September of last year to examine the deal.

Although the agency hasn’t filed a lawsuit to stop the merger, it isn’t completely ruling out possible future challenges.

According to Peter Kaplan, a spokesman for the agency, the FTC’s inquiry into Amazon’s purchase of One Medical is still ongoing.

The Commission will continue to assess any potential harm to the competition brought on by this combination and any possible damage to consumers by Amazon’s control and use of sensitive consumer health information held by One Medical.”

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, who succeeded founder Jeff Bezos in 2021 and sees health care as a growth area for the company, completed his first acquisition with One Medical.

Consumers demand and deserve better, and for more than ten years,

One Medical has been working and innovating to deliver it. Together, we think we can make everyone’s experience receiving medical care simpler, quicker, more individualized, and more practical, according to a statement from Jassy.

The FTC is also investigating Amazon’s $1.65 billion proposed acquisition of iRobot, which was revealed in August last year.
