The Aron Kodesh was broken, and a Sefer Torah was flung to the ground and ripped during a startling break-in and vandalism at the Ashdod shul for the Georgian population.
A quantity of money that was concealed in the Aron Kodesh was also taken by the burglar.
The break-in happened on Wednesday night. Evidently, the thief smashed pieces of the Aron Kodesh and flung objects out of it while looking for money.
The identity of the burglar is still unknown, but police have started an inquiry. In a press release, the police stated that “investigators and crime scene experts are gathering clues and findings in order to determine the identity of the suspect and bring about his arrest.”
When worshipers arrived at the synagogue, they discovered damaged Torah scrolls as well as significant damage to the building’s furnishings.
After a special education kindergarten was vandalized over the weekend, this is the second significant vandalism event in the same neighborhood. The visitors who came to worship shed tears.
They remarked, “Who would have believed that the shul would look like this? and questioned whether it was a result of the recent incitement directed at the Torah-observant community. There are over 150,000 Georgians living in Israel, and Ashdod is home to one of the country’s largest Georgian communities.
