At least 26 people were killed in what may have been a hit-and-run collision between a tractor-trailer and a passenger van in northern Mexico on Sunday morning, according to police.
The vehicles crashed and caught fire approximately a half-hour outside of Ciudad Victoria, the state capital of Tamaulipas, according to the state’s public security ministry, which Reuters quoted.
Responders observed the cab pulling the trailer was missing, which led officials to believe the truck driver had removed it from the collision and driven off in it.
More victims may have been concealed in the massive amount of smoldering debris, according to prosecutors and police in the border state.
Numerous of these collisions have been attributed to overloaded cars transporting illegal immigrants.
However, it was suggested by local media that this accident may have involved extended family members coming home from an outing. The authorities did not confirm the reports.
