Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Israeli minister of national security, sparked outrage throughout the world this week when he said on Israeli television that the freedom of movement for settlers in Judea and Samaria overrides the rights of Palestinians.
In the wake of two terrible terrorist attacks, that happened in the previous week on Judean and Samarian roadways and resulted in the lives of drei Israelis, Ben-Gvir made his remarks.
„My right, my wife’s right, and my children’s right to move around Judea and Samaria, is more important than freedom of movement for the Arabs“, Ben-Gvir declared. „The right to life comes before the right to freedom of movement.“
In her response to Ben-Gvir, the Palestinian-American supermodel Bella Hadid purposefully misinterpreted his claim that Israeli lives are more valuable than Palestinian ones. „In no place, no time, especially in 2023, should one life be more valuable than another’s“, wrote Hadid, a Palestinian-American who was born in the US. „Especially just because of their race, culture, or outright hostility.“
In a video recorded by the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem, Israeli soldiers in the divided city of Hebron are heard telling Palestinians that they are not allowed on a street designated for Jews.
„Does anyone else remember anything about this?“, she penned. Adding to the criticism, the US State Department stated that it „strongly condemned Ben-Gvir’s inflammatory comments” and „all racist rhetoric.”
Ben-Gvir, a resident of Hevron, called Hadid a „Israel hater” in response and asked her to visit Hevron to observe the situation firsthand. He posted on X, „You took a portion of an interview I gave and spread it throughout the world to make me look like a racist and evil.“
“I welcome you to visit Kiryat Arba to see how we live, how Jews are slaughtered there every day despite having done nothing wrong to anyone, and how I, my wife, and my children are constantly in danger from terrorists who reside nearby.
So, overriding the rights of terrorists who stone us and kill us, I and my Jewish brethren have the right to travel home in peace from the roadways of Judea and Samaria. I won’t retract or apologize; instead, I’ll keep repeating the same thing. Ben-Gvir said that the „Israeli radical left” had „selectively” misquoted him when his comments attracted attention on a global scale, implying that he was only discussing limiting the rights of „terrorists who throw stones at us.”
