On Sunday, MK Benny Gantz paid a visit to Rabbi Meir Tzvi Bergman, a leader in the Council of Torah Sages and Rabbi Shach’s son-in-law.
Rabbi Bergman stated that there could not be any compromises on the law during a meeting between Gantz, the leader of the National Unity Party, and Rabbi Bergman. “We cannot compromise on the Torah because we don’t own the Torah,” Rabbi Bergman remarked.
Gantz retorted that he was seeking agreements rather than compromises. When Rabbi Shach heard about a soldier who had died, he cried out of sorrow, according to Rabbi Bergman.
He continued by saying that the Torah was the only thing that had kept us alive for 2000 years when we lacked both land and weaponry.
Gantz brought up the start of the new school year, and Rabbi Bergman stated that his father-in-law would not eat on September 1 because “how can I eat when a million children are going to school and don’t even know Krias Shma?” Gantz kept talking about how Israel’s citizens must come together and come to accords.
Gantz afterwards paid a visit to Rabbi Bergman’s Yeshivas Rashbi, where he expressed his enthusiasm for the students’ and avreichim’s dedication to learning and even sat down to study for a short while.
