The Biden administration could outlaw a convenience used by many Americans.
According to CNN, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is exploring a national ban on gas stoves because of the dangerous chemicals the equipment generates.
Recent research indicates that the emissions may lead to respiratory and health issues. Additionally, according to members of Congress, Blacks and Hispanics are more at risk from gas stoves than White people are.
According to CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr., “This is a concealed hazard.”
“Every choice is available. It is possible to outlaw products that cannot be rendered safe.
According to a December 2022 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, the usage of gas stoves is to blame for about 13% of childhood asthma cases in the US.
In a letter, a group of senators noted that long-term exposure to NO2 has been found to lead to the development of asthma likely and that short-term exposure has been connected to worsening children’s asthma.
They also noted that it could aggravate cardiovascular diseases.
The letter, which Democrats Cory Booker signed, Elizabeth Warren, and others, made the case that Black, Latino, and low-income households are more likely to suffer from these illnesses because they either reside in houses with poor ventilation or are more likely to live close to a coal ash site or waste incinerator.
According to some studies, the EPA and WHO consider the levels of emissions from stoves, including those of nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and delicate matter, dangerous.
Studies have also connected gas stoves to ailments like cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses.
The CPSC said in a statement to CNN that any regulatory action on gas stoves would “involve a lengthy process” and that the agency has not yet suggested such action.
