Boycotts Threaten NJ Kosher Bakery After Refusing Orders for Rainbow Pastries

A few weeks before the U.S. The Supreme Court found that Colorado could not compel a Christian website designer to work on a kosher West Orange, New Jersey, website supporting homosexual marriage.

An order for a rainbow cake and 10 pounds of rainbow cookies in honor of Pride Month was canceled by the bakery.

After West Orange Bake Shop cancelled two orders from synagogue B’nai Israel, a Conservative synagogue in Millburn, New Jersey, the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ initially informed staff and supporters in a letter dated June 20 that it would no longer place orders from the kosher bakery.

The decision made by the bakery “did not align with the value of B’tzelem Elohim, that each of us is created in the Divine Image and deserves to be treated as such,” wrote Dov Ben-Shimon, executive vice president and CEO of the local Federation, according to the New Jersey Jewish News.

Ben-Shimon sent out a fresh statement through email a week after the initial one—after the original email had been made public.

He wrote, “We are looking forward to further discussions with the vendor with the objective of reaching a resolution.

He continued, “Our goal is to bring the variety and depth of our numerous constituents together.

We deeply apologize that our actions have caused division in our community.

According to Yitzy Mittel, the bakery’s co-owner, he created a rainbow cake for the synagogue last year but was uncomfortable since it conflicts with his religious convictions.

He revealed to the media that he also avoids using crosses in his cakes and that he would refuse a request from a client to write a homophobic remark on one.

In 2018, the Supreme Court sided with a Colorado baker who had refused to make a special wedding cake for a same-sex marriage out of religious conviction.
