President Joe Biden is set to sign an executive order to protect access to abortion on Friday after the Supreme Court ruled that abortion is already illegal in the United States.
A press release from the White House states that Biden will speak Friday morning “on protecting access to reproductive health care services.”
The EO also aims to provide the action plan of the Biden administration regarding the recent Supreme Court decision.
In the same press release, the White House acknowledges its options are limited and that Congress would have to act if Americans are going to regain the right to abortion after the top court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide.
The White House said that “the only way to secure a woman’s right to choose is for Congress to restore the protections of Roe as a federal law.”
“Until then, he has committed to doing everything in his power to defend reproductive rights and protect access to safe and legal abortion,” the White House added.
Moreover, the White House further revealed that it would also convene volunteer lawyers to provide women and providers with pro bono legal assistance to help them navigate new state restrictions after the Supreme Court ruling.
