Local media reports from the UK revealed that the British government will declare Hamas as a terrorist organization on Friday.
Sources said Home Secretary Priti Patel is expected to announce the significant policy change during a security speech she is scheduled to deliver later Friday at The Heritage Foundation in Washington.
“Hamas has significant terrorist capability, including access to extensive and sophisticated weaponry, as well as terrorist training facilities, and it has long been involved in significant terrorist violence,” Patel will likely state, based on a pre-published excerpt of her speech.
It was learned that while the UK recognized the military arm of Hamas as a terrorist organization since 2001, it was not until today that they will also declare as a terrorist organization the political wing of the militant Palestinian group that controls the Gaza Strip as well.
In a statement, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid is happy with the expected decision of the UK to declare the whole Hamas as a terrorist organization.
“This is an important and significant decision that gives U.K. security forces additional tools to prevent the continued strengthening of the Hamas terrorist organization, including in Britain itself,” Lapid said.
“There is no legitimate part of a terrorist organization, and any attempt to differentiate between parts of a terrorist organization is artificial,” Lapid added.
