In a recently discovered old Facebook post, Rep. George Santos, a Long Island Republican with a history of lying about his background, including that he was a Jewish descendent of Holocaust survivors, appeared to praise Hitler and make light of the murder of Jews.
Santos allegedly commented, “hight hitler lololololololololololololol” and “somebody [sic] murder her!!” in a 2011 remark under a friend’s post.
Most of the black people and Jews, LOL! Screenshots of the since-deleted statement were supplied to Patch Glen Cove by a former friend of Santos.
The congressman’s former roommate, who also said that Santos used to make jokes about paying the bill at meals, “but he brushed it off saying he was Jewish,” provided the site with confirmation of its validity.
The claim is “totally incorrect,” according to Santos’ attorney Joseph Murray, who also stated that “there is nothing to talk about.”
Santos’ lies, exposed in a December New York Times investigation released after he won his election, have already prompted calls for his resignation from the Nassau County GOP and the Republican Jewish Coalition, which has stated that Santos is no longer permitted to attend their events.
The congressman’s exaggerated claims about his Jewish origin were of particular concern to the local party organization.
Should Santos resign, both parties have already lined up potential successors, including Republican county legislator and Ethiopian-Israeli Mazi Melesa Pilip.
Santos, recently seen taking pictures at a karaoke bar in Washington, D.C., has refused to resign and appears to be enjoying the unwanted publicity.
On Friday, he spoke on the House floor to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
