Congressman Mike Lawler of Rockland introduces legislation to defund institutions like CUNY

Rep. Mike Lawler, a Republican, wants to prevent CUNY from getting federal tax dollars.

He is acting, in contrast to other politicians who only give lip service.

Lawler is submitting legislation on Thursday to bar institutions that “authorize antisemitic events on campus” from accessing student loan and grant programs.

In his brief time in Congress, Lawler has supported the Jewish community more than any other member.

The historic suggestion was made in response to Fatima Mohammed’s violently antisemitic commencement speech at CUNY Law School a few weeks ago.

She called for students to join a “revolution” against Zionism, capitalism, and racism and accused the Israeli military and the United States military of “indiscriminate” murder.

And even then, those weren’t the worst elements. Mohammed claimed that Israel “continues to indiscriminately rain bullets and bombs on worshipers, murdering the old and the young, attacking even funerals and graveyards,” and incites “lynch mobs to target Palestinian homes and businesses as it imprisons its children.”

Monsey, New Square, and other orthodox Jewish communities are located in Lawler’s district in Westchester and Rockland counties.

He has been an outspoken supporter of Jewish issues, a close friend of the frum community, and a steadfast advocate for Israel.

The ”Stop Antisemitism on College Campuses Act” was introduced in reaction to a recent contentious commencement speech at the CUNY Law School, when the speaker, student Fatima Mousa Mohammed, said that the Higher Education Act of 1965 should be changed, according to Lawler, to make it clear that institutions cannot “authorize, facilitate, provide funding for, or otherwise support” antisemitism.

“No college or university should receive a single dollar of federal education funding if they peddle in the promotion of antisemitism at an event on their campus,” Lawler proclaimed.

“CUNY should be ashamed of itself for allowing this ridiculous antisemitism to permeate its campus,” he continued.

“Supporting our Jewish communities in New York requires stopping antisemitism at the source.”
