Democrats applauding their successful campaign to maintain power in the U.S. This year’s Senate election will soon be followed by a potentially more difficult 2024 campaign.
The party will be defending 23 seats going into the next election cycle, including two held by independents who joined the Democratic caucus.
Comparatively, Republicans are hoping to hold onto just ten seats.
Some of the 2024 elections are in states that have grown more unfriendly toward Democrats, like West Virginia, Ohio, and Montana, which heightens the difficulty that could arise.
Some of the same fiercely disputed states that dominated this year’s midterm elections, such as Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada, are home to other Democratic-held seats.
And while Democrats won each of those contests, they did so at a high cost and occasionally tiny margins.
For instance, Democratic incumbent Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto won Nevada by 9,000 votes, or less than 1% of the vote.
For the time being, both parties declare they are totally focused on winning the Georgia Senate runoff on December 6.
However, Democrats who are running for office in 2024 keep an eye on this year’s election results, when the party surpassed predictions, as they are aware they may face strong opposition.
Sen. Jacky Rosen of Nevada, a Democrat running for reelection for the first time, says it means focusing on subjects discussed at dinner parties and praising laws like the infrastructure law and the gun violence legislation signed by President Joe Biden.
According to Rosen, who stated in an interview, races are always close.
Nothing is ever taken for granted by us.
Several external factors, especially the presidential election and the attention it attracts, could impact the dynamics of the upcoming Senate race.
The 80-year-old Biden has stated that he “intentionally” intends to run for reelection and will make a definitive decision early next year.
Former president Donald Trump has declared his intention to run for president a third time, and numerous other Republicans are preparing to do the same.
The final nominee in each party could significantly impact contests farther down the ballot, such as those for the Senate.
