Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has no intention of amending his earlier order barring school districts from forcing students to mask up despite the mounting COVID cases in Florida.
The stance of DeSantis opposes the recent call of President Joe Biden to implement restrictions, including mask mandates in schools.
DeSantis defended that the mask mandates should not come from the government but the parents themselves.
“He thinks that should be a decision for the government, well I can tell ya in Florida, the parents are gonna be the ones in charge of that decision,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis also defended that the cause of the surge is due to Biden’s immigration policies.
“Why don’t you get this border secure, and until you do that, I don’t want to hear a blip about COVID from you,” DeSantis said of the president.
However, health experts in Florida said the surge of COVID is not due to undocumented immigrants but low vaccination rates and the going out of people without their masks.
As of Wednesday, 135 children under 18 in Florida were hospitalized with COVID, the highest it’s ever been.
