As a result of floods earlier this month following record rainfall, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stated on Saturday that he would seek the Biden administration to designate Broward County as a disaster region.
The declaration would make Broward residents who suffered property damage eligible for various loans and other aid forms if approved. Also eligible would be local governments.
In some county areas, rain totaled more than 2 feet (0.6 meters) on April 12. In certain county areas, the 1-in-a-1,000-year flood left up to 3 feet (0.9 meters) of water. According to the state, 1,000 residents suffered severe damage.
The airport was also closed for about two days due to the water. Long lineups at the pump resulted from sluggish gas supply to the port.
Shortly, the Republican governor is anticipated to declare his intention to run against President Joe Biden in the upcoming election.
Despite constantly sparring, the Democratic president and the governor have witnessed their governments come together in times of crisis.
This includes the 2021 Surfside condo tower collapse that claimed 98 lives and Hurricane Ian from the previous year, which claimed the lives of over 140 people and left others homeless.
This version corrects that DeSantis stated he would approach the Biden administration about disaster relief rather than saying he had already done so.
