A Likud politician is putting out a proposal to partition the Temple Mount in Jerusalem between Muslims and Jews and to revoke Jordan’s position as the site’s custodian.
MK Amit Halevi described a proposal for the 37-acre complex that houses the Al Aqsa Mosque to the Zman Yisrael Hebrew news site,
wherein Jews would be given authority over the middle and northern areas, where the Dome of the Rock is located, and Muslims would be given authority over the southern end, which is where the Al Aqsa Mosque is located.
Halevi claims that since that area of the Temple Mount is the holiest location in Judaism and is where the first and second Temples are said to have stood, the restructuring makes sense from a theological perspective. Jewish texts situate the foundation stone in the middle of the Dome of the Rock.
“This is where the First Temple and the Second Temple, erected by immigrants from Babylonia, formerly stood.
It is obvious that the stones are ours without having to be examined, he continued. Halevi also wants to revoke the agreement between Israel and the Jordanian Waqf under which the Islamic trust is in charge of and oversees the Islamic structures on the Temple Mount.
