Elon Musk tweeted that George Soros “hates humanity,” adding that the billionaire and liberal megadonor “reminds me of Magneto,” a comic book antagonist who appears in Marvel’s X-Men series.
Attacks on Soros come as Twitter has been under fire for its lenient standards on hate speech in the months after Elon Musk, one of the wealthiest men in the world, purchased the company last year.
The progressive megadonor and billionaire Soros is the subject of numerous antisemitic conspiracy theories.
The superhero Magneto is a Holocaust survivor, just like Soros. The liberal Jewish journalist Brian Krassenstein brought up this similarity in response to Musk’s tweet, adding, “Magneto’s experiences during the Holocaust as a survivor shaped his perspective as well as his depth and empathy,” and that Soros “gets it.”
You think they have good intentions, Musk retorted. Not at all. He aims to undermine civilization itself.
Soros despises people.
Musk has criticized progressive programs, but what motivated him to attack Soros is unclear.
However, Soros’ family investment agency sold its stock in Musk’s electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla on the same day as the tweets.
Conservatives have long targeted Soros, 92, for supporting leftist organizations and politicians here and abroad.
Some of the attacks in the past ten years have repeated antisemitic conspiracy theories, portraying Soros as satanic, charging him with desiring global dominance, and erroneously accusing him of aiding in the Holocaust rather than surviving it as a child.
Musk reinstated right-wing extremists’ Twitter accounts previously suspended by Musk, who describes himself as an “absolutist” of free expression.
This decision upset Jewish anti-bigotry organizations. After some of the fanatics started tweeting horrible things once more, he suspended them again.
He has received praise from extremists, who have supported some of his views. In March, research by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue think tank revealed that antisemitism had increased significantly on the site in the months since Musk gained control of it.
In December, Musk disbanded an advisory group focused on “Trust and Safety” on Twitter.
