Erdogan Says Rapprochement With Israel To Continue Apace

According to Reuters, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared on Wednesday that his nation’s reconciliation with Jerusalem would continue regardless of the results of Israel’s national elections.

Regardless of the election’s outcome, Erdogan stated, “We want to preserve relations with Israel on a sustainable basis, based on mutual respect for sensitivities and common interests.”

Following Tuesday’s elections, Israeli opposition leader and former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems prepared for a third term in that post.

Following the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident, nine Turkish nationals died attempting to break the naval blockade on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, and relations between Ankara and Jerusalem soured.

After a long schism, Israel and Turkey announced in August that full diplomatic ties had been restored.

Irit Lillian was named ambassador to Turkey by the Israeli Foreign Ministry in September.

She is the first person to hold the position since Turkey’s expulsion of Israel’s ambassador and withdrawal of its ambassador in response to fighting between the Israel Defense Forces and Palestinians along the Gaza border in 2018.

Benny Gantz, the Israeli defense minister, met with Erdoan last Thursday in Ankara. This was the Israeli defense minister’s first trip to Turkey in almost ten years.
