Oliver Ferber is a well-known cross-country runner and observant Jew. In 2021, Ferber made the difficult choice to skip a prestigious competition slated to take place on Shabbat.
The effects of the enormous Kiddush Hashem have been highly favorable. Oliver’s incredible genuine story is currently being told in the ESPN documentary “Running on Faith.”
Ferber, a Rockville, Maryland’s Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School (JDS) student, had adopted a much greater degree of Shabbos devotion in November 2021 than his school and community had instructed.
On that November day, according to ESPN, “He had decided to stand on the sidelines of Maryland’s cross country state championship meet. Instead of the track singlet, he agreed to wear khakis and a green sweater.
It was, in his heart, what he felt he had to do, so he had decided to remain on the outside looking in, watching as his squad raced down the last stretch toward the finish line.
The narrative said: “It was about faith, conviction, and belief. It was about the weight of answering one of the most challenging questions a person can ask: What do you do when everyone you can trust is encouraging you to do one thing, but you’re pretty confident you should be doing something else?
