The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) officially decommissioned COVID-19 health and safety regulations for aviation on Thursday.
The two organizations released the Aviation Health Safety Protocol (AHSP) in May 2020 with the intention of fostering a unified approach to COVID-19-related actions.
According to ECDC, the procedure is also intended to minimize interference with aviation operations while maintaining the safety of the European populace.
Since March 2023, COVID-19-related trends in the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) have been declining and remaining constant, which led to the decision to abolish the protocol.
COVID-19 is now an established and persistent health risk and does not qualify as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), according to a May 5 statement from the World Health Organization (WHO).
However, the two European organizations continue to advocate for the need for optimal ventilation, hygienic practices, and respiratory etiquette among travelers, crew members, aviation stakeholders, and national responsible authorities.
