The Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty will receive government financing for its initiatives, which include 101 food banks, 20 places to find inexpensive housing, and 15 Jewish community centers in New York City and the surrounding areas, for the first time in more than ten years.
According to David Greenfield, CEO of the Met Council, “this enormous inflow of resources will be used to strengthen our emergency food program, allowing us to touch the lives of so many more people and families struggling with food insecurity.
“This isn’t just about numbers,” he continued. “It’s about making a significant, noticeable difference in our communities and giving food to those who most need it.”
The $1 million in financing was revealed by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), the leader of the House Democrats, at a Brooklyn event when 500 boxes of food were delivered.
Met Council has done tremendous work—but that work was urgently necessary when a once-in-a-century pandemic struck our community, struck the nation, and struck the world,” Jeffries said.
The “Met Council has really been a shelter in the time of storm.” The largest free kosher food provider in the United States, the Met Council gave more than 250,000 New Yorkers more than 21 million pounds of food in 2017.
