Despite overwhelming evidence, the president of Mexico claimed on Thursday that his country neither produces nor uses fentanyl.
The synthetic opioid pandemic appeared to be primarily a U.S. issue, according to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who also suggested using family values to combat drug addiction.
His remarks were made while White House Homeland Security Adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall was in Mexico to discuss the fentanyl epidemic. Moreover, it coincides with U.S. Republicans’ plan to assault drug production facilities in Mexico using the military.
The production of fentanyl in Mexican laboratories using precursor chemicals that are imported from China has already been recognized by the Mexican government. Over 70,000 opioid-related fatalities are attributed to fentanyl each year in the United States.
Fentanyl is not produced or consumed in this country, according to López Obrador. Why don’t they (the Americans) address their social deterioration issue? ”
The Mexican president continued by citing several factors, such as single-parent households, parents who kick outgrown children, or parents who send elderly relatives to nursing homes “and visit them once a year,” as to why he believed Americans were resorting to fentanyl.
The Mexican president’s remarks stood in stark contrast to American ones. According to Ambassador Ken Salazar’s tweet on Thursday, the goal of the meeting between Sherwood-Randall and Mexico’s attorney general was “to strengthen security cooperation and fight against the scourge of fentanyl to better safeguard our two nations.”
Officials in the United States and even Mexico agree that Mexico produces and processes practically all of the fentanyl used in the country.
In February, the Mexican army declared it had busted the most extensive synthetic drug lab ever discovered, seizing more than 500,000 fentanyl pills. The outdoor lab was reportedly found in Culiacan, the state capital of Sinaloa, according to the army.
The army raided in the same city in 2021 on a lab it claimed produced over 70 million blue fentanyl tablets per month for the Sinaloa cartel.
According to Mexico security expert David Saucedo, the president is lying. The CJNG (Jalisco New Generation Cartel) and the Sinaloa Cartel, among other Mexican organizations, have learned to manufacture it.”
