In a Bronx fire at an illegally converted rooming house where residents said they had lived without heat, one person was killed, and two others were hurt.
Around 1:55 pm, the fire started in the two-story residence on Evergreen Avenue near Westchester Avenue in Soundview, fire officials said on Sunday.
According to Deputy Chief James Donlevy, “we had a considerable fire on the first and second stories when we arrived.”
The roaring flames that firemen pulled up to caused FDNY officials to label the incident as “suspicious.”
Burns and smoke inhalation struck three victims. According to Donlevy, two escaped on their own with only minor wounds.
However, firefighters found the other person on the second story unconscious, and the person passed away inside the home.
The victim’s identity was not promptly made public.
More than 100 firefighters doused the flames, and by 3:05 pm, they had been put out.
Fire marshals from the FDNY were trying to determine what set the fire off on Sunday night.
