Col. Sharon Itach was appointed by the Israel Defense Forces as the country’s first-ever military attaché to Morocco, which resulted in the normalization of ties with Jerusalem as part of the Abraham Accords, a deal mediated by the Trump administration.

Itach, who is of Moroccan heritage, previously served as the 489th “Kedem” search and rescue battalion’s commander.

He currently oversees the IDF Home Front Command’s Haifa district. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi’s nomination still needs Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s approval.

In a call with his Moroccan counterpart, Abdellatif Loudiyi, last month, Gallant praised the strengthening of military cooperation with Rabat.

According to a statement from his office, Gallant stated, “We discussed the defense ties critical to regional security and stability and stressed the need to further deepen cooperation.

Amir Ohana, speaker of the Knesset, made history by traveling to the parliament of a Muslim nation for the first time ever in June and expressing support for Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara.
In exchange for Morocco adopting the Abraham Accords, which also improved Israel’s ties with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan, the United States acknowledged Morocco as the land’s owner in 2020.

Also in June, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and the leaders of the nation’s security forces were among the people with whom Israeli National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi met in Rabat during a series of talks.
