The IDF and Shin Bet agents carried out another arrest operation in the Aqabat Jabr refugee camp within the city as part of the counterterrorism operation that was started on Saturday night near Jericho.
Five terrorists, most linked to Hamas, were killed by IDF personnel who came under fire during the operation.
The goal of the operation was to apprehend the terrorist cell responsible for the shooting that took place in Vered Yericho, a neighboring town, on January 28.
To carry out a terrible attack, two terrorists carrying weapons and wearing military vests arrived at the door of a restaurant in the neighborhood of Vered Yeriho, where 30 people were seated.
The terrorists’ weapons malfunctioned, and the terrorists left after firing one shot and fled toward the city of Jericho.
Following the assault, the armed suspects were barricading themselves in a home in the Aqabat Jabr Camp, a neighboring city to Jericho, with the help of their families and neighborhood residents, while announcing their intention to carry out further terrorist activities, according to Shin Bet and IDF intelligence.
The IDF made fruitless attempts to find the suspects on Saturday night, and the search for them resumed on Sunday night as the Shin Bet identified two potential locations for the terrorists’ barricades.
Once at one of the locations, the terrorists started a fire on the Lions of the Valley unit. Despite being shot in his bulletproof vest, the company commander could still kill the terrorists by returning fire.
Other soldiers defeated further terrorists, killing five and injuring three more arrested.
The majority of the terrorists were Hamas members who had taken part in or helped the terrorists from the incident on January 28.
As part of the Breakwave operation to reduce terror in the area, IDF forces also carried out other operations throughout Judea and Samaria, where they detained six more terror suspects.
