Following a jogging accident over the weekend, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz tweeted a pirate-style photo of himself on Monday, sporting a black eye patch and dark-red bruises on the right side of his face.
The chancellor captioned the image, “Am excited to see the memes. Scholz smiled a little and added the following message to the picture, which appears to have been taken at the chancellery: “Thanks for the well wishes; it looks worse than it is! ”
Scholz bruised his face after falling while jogging on Saturday, forcing him to postpone some appointments this weekend, according to the government.
Later on Monday, his spokesperson told reporters in Berlin that the chancellor was doing reasonably well given the circumstances. According to Steffen Hebestreit, “He was in quite a good mood this morning, but still looks a bit battered,” and the picture was released “so that everyone can get used to how he will look in the next week or two.”
The central Hesse region will host a state election on October 8; the 65-year-old German leader canceled appointments there on Sunday. He was, however, scheduled to appear in public later on Monday in Berlin.
In his hometown of Potsdam, which is located 28 kilometers (17 miles) southwest of the German capital, Scholz reportedly fell while running, according to local media.
Germany has been led by Scholz since December 2021.
He previously held the positions of mayor of Hamburg and minister of finance and labor for the nation. Scholz claims on the website for his party that he detested sports in school but that his wife, Britta Ernst, gave him a taste for them. “Today I jog as often as I can,” he claims.
According to Scholz, he makes an effort to fit in two or three times per week for walking, rowing, or jogging. He also likes to cycle.
