
Ten former Israeli intelligence officers were flown back to their homeland on a military plane after surviving a boat disaster on Sunday on northern Italy’s Lake Maggiore.
According to a report published in the La Repubblica daily on Tuesday, one of the four people who perished when the boat capsized due to stormy weather while being used to celebrate a birthday was a retired member of the Israeli security forces.
The other fatalities among the 22 The Italian victims were identified as Claudio Alonzi, 62, and Dr. Tiziana Barnovi, 53, while the Russian victim was identified as Anya Bozhkova, 50.
According to the report, 18 of the 20 survivors were also either active or former intelligence agents.
The Italians were removed from hospitals and hotels as swiftly as the Israelis were, “so as not to leave a trace.”
The 50-year-old Israeli’s death and the notification of his family were both confirmed on Monday by the Israeli embassy in Rome.
The embassy was working on bringing his body to Israel for burial.
“Every time we would ask, he would smile broadly and say nothing.
The most discreet man I knew was the salt of the earth,” a close friend of the Israeli victim said.
