On Twitter, a prominent Orthodox Jewish influencer denounced a trend that he believes has done significant harm to the frum community.
Berel Solomon, a self-described “Jewish businessman” and “Jewish movie producer” who is “on a mission to give my first $1,000,000 to charity,” uploaded a tearful video on Twitter criticizing users who openly insult or humiliate frum Jews on social media, frequently while hiding behind anonymity.
I need to draw attention to something in our neighborhood that is getting worse every single day, Solomon added. In our society, it has become socially acceptable to publicly humiliate and ridicule someone online.
It’s occurring frequently.
How disgusting is it to take a person and post about them on podcasts, Twitter, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp statuses? Families are being dismantled, and this is not a Jewish trait.
“Perhaps people think that it’s not so bad because they are not seeing the face of the person they are attacking on the internet,” Berel remarked. However, in Judaism, attacking someone in public is the same as killing them.
“Our Sages advise us that embarrassing someone is worse than diving into a blazing furnace.
Before, it was only done in front of a small group. Today, embarrassing someone in front of a hundred, thousand, or tens of thousands of people only takes a flick of the wrist on social media.
