Gold bars left on a Swiss train are collected by the Red Cross

Prosecutors announced Friday that a strange stockpile of 120 gold bars discovered on a Swiss train nearly four years ago has been donated to the Red Cross, after they were unable to identify the owner.

A parcel was discovered on a train from St. Gallen to Lucerne in October 2019, according to a statement from the Lucerne regional public prosecutor’s office. The words „ICRC valuables” were written on the parcel, seemingly referring to the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross.

„The package contained 120 gold bars (total gold weight: 3.732 kilogrammes), which were labelled with a logo and serial numbers, the statement read. However, gold bars are currently being offered for close to $60,000 a kilo. It was not stated, how much the stash was worth.

The statement read: „Despite extensive investigations, the owner of the gold bars could not be determined.“ Prosecutors declared the case closed because „neither the owner of the gold nor a connection with a potential property crime could be determined.”

„The find is handed over to the ICRC”, the statement read. „Since the gold was in a package addressed to the ICRC, it can be assumed that the unidentified owner wanted to hand over the gold to this organization.“
