To avert the continued surge of coronavirus cases in New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has issued a vaccine order for employees of the state’s MTA and Port Authority.
The mandate gave the transit workers the option to get vaccinated by Labor Day or face weekly coronavirus testing.
At a press conference on Monday, Cuomo explained he issued the order because vaccination is now needed to stop the rise of COVID cases in New York.
“I don’t believe a mask policy is going to be enough,” Cuomo said.
“I think we’re going to have to talk about a vaccination policy,” Cuomo added.
Cuomo based his order on the latest data released by John Hopkins University.
The data shows New York’s seven-day coronavirus case count average jump to 2,418.
The data saw an increase of 81% from the prior week.
The governor said as frontline workers transit workers need to be vaccinated now.
“You should be vaccinated, or don’t work in a frontline position,” Cuomo said.
