BDE: Maran Hagaon Rabbi Yerachmiel Gershon Edelstein, head of the Lithuanian chareidi community and Rosh Yeshiva of Ponovezh, passed suddenly on Tuesday morning at the age of 100, sending shockwaves through the Torah community.
Because of his advanced age and inability to undergo catheterization, Rabbi Edelstein had long-standing cardiac issues that had gotten much worse since Pesach.
Nevertheless, he followed his regular routine and didn’t miss a single shiur between Pesach and Shavuos while taking medication.
Rabbi Edelstein was hospitalized on Shavuos night after having a heart attack.
At the yeshiva, the learning was halted, and Tehillim was said in support of his recovery.
Over the following days, his condition changed, eventually deteriorating on Monday night, and he passed away at 9:30 AM Tuesday.
Tuesday at 2:30 PM, the levaya is scheduled to depart from Ponovezh Yeshiva.
As a gesture of sadness for the great leader who had delivered shiurim at the yeshiva for more than 75 years, the Paroches were brought down in the yeshiva.
Including one who was born just an hour after his departure, Rabbi Edelstein is survived by his spouse, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
May God bless his memory.
