Israeli fans of the Harry Potter star Emma Watson condemned her for a pro-Palestine Instagram post that she put up recently.
On Sunday night, Watson posted a picture on Instagram of a rally of pro-Palestinian activists, with the phrase “solidarity is a verb” written in large letters. The caption of the post read, “Solidarity does not assume that our struggles are the same struggles, or that our pain is the same pain, or that our hope is for the same future. Solidarity involves commitment, and work, as well as the recognition that even if we do not have the same feelings, or the same lives, or the same bodies, we do live on common ground.”
Reacting to the post was Gilad Erdan, Israeli Ambassador to the UN, who tweeted: “Fiction may work in Harry Potter but it does not work in reality. If it did, the magic used in the wizarding world could eliminate the evils of Hamas (which oppresses women & seeks the annihilation of Israel) and the PA (which supports terror). I would be in favor of that!”

Following the post, many Israelis condemned her, with some even labeling her antisemitic. Others pointed out that Hamas’ cruel treatment of women goes against Watson’s history of supporting feminism. Danny Danon, former Israeli Ambassador to the UN, made reference to Harry Potter, by tweeting that he was taking “10 points from Gryffindor for being an antisemite.”
Another Israeli user wrote, “Wow, this is really disappointing. You have so many Jewish fans. Israeli Jewish fans, too. All we ask for in this life is a tiny piece of land that we can call home and practice our rights to self-determination and self-governance and self-defense. This does not come at the expense of the Palestinian people, who have been offered the same thing multiple times but use each opportunity to commit acts of violence against Jews. There has been a genocidal war against half the world’s Jewish community for the better part of a century and today you have chosen the side of the oppressor, the majority, the imperialist.”
Watson has often been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause and was unsurprisingly praised for the post by several Palestinian and Arabic newspapers.
